Dr. McAlpine’s lab conducts basic research studying immune cells in cardiovascular disease. The lab has a particular interest in the biological mechanisms that link sleep to the immune system and cardiovascular health. We use innovative animal models, human samples, and state-of-the-art technologies to ask important and profound biological questions. The lab is located in the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), one block from Central Park, in beautiful New York City.
We ask how sleep modulates the immune system and confers protection against cardiovascular disease. We have shown that sleep fragmentation activates hematopoiesis leading to an over-supply of circulating leukocytes and worsened atherosclerosis (Nature, 2019). Increased hematopoietic activity induced by sleep fragmentation reduces hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) diversity and the emergence of clonal hematopoiesis (Cell, 2021). Building on these findings we are exploring how sleep shapes the biology of HSCs, inflammatory networks, and the immune system during cardiovascular disease.
We are seeking motivated postdocs with a background in immunology, cardiology, and/or neuroscience. Postdoctoral Fellows will work on exciting projects and science. They will be expected to work collaboratively with other faculty, postdocs, staff, and students at the CVRI. They will design and conduct experiment; summarize, interpret, and publish their data; develop grant proposals and apply for funding; design and adapt new research techniques; and publish their findings. Postdoctoral fellows will have dedicated lab and desk space, access to writing and computational areas and conference rooms. Dedicated administrative and technical teams will aid in all necessary tasks related to grant writing and submission, publication, financials, hiring, and smooth technical operations in the lab. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to work collaboratively as part of a cooperative multidisciplinary team.
We are seeking individuals who have completed or are nearing the completion of their PhD or MD in Immunology, Cardiology, Neuroscience or a related field .
