Electron microscopy/Facility Support – (Full-time) Background: The Embryology Department is one of six departments comprising the Carnegie Institution for Science. Carnegie is a non-profit research institute and our department is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) located on the JHU Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD. The department consists of 10 laboratories studying a variety of questions in molecular, cell and developmental biology. The Department is seeking a motivated individual with strong electron microscopy (EM) expertise (>3 years) to run and maintain our core EM facility with a newly acquired Hitachi HT 7800 (with an AMT Nanosprint 12 camera running Hitachi software) and equipment for histology and sectioning. Principal Responsibilities: The most important responsibility of this position is to provide electron microscopy service to all labs who need it. This involves acquisition and fixation of specimens, embedding, cutting and photography of samples as well as instruction on any phase of the process that the lab may choose. Routine upkeep and maintenance of the EM and all other laboratory equipment. It also includes providing histology and cryoscopy services and instruction to all labs. Other Duties: Employees at our department help with various common tasks beyond their main job responsibilities. This position will have the following additional and infrequent duties. Stocking and distributing supplies: 1. Order and maintain the common stockroom to ensure adequate supplies are maintained for the department and maintain the database to ensure proper billing for the labs and department. 2. Provide ethanol for the labs as part of the stockroom and maintain records according to state and federal regulations. 3. Maintain liquid nitrogen stocks for lab usage. 4. Stocking and distributing needles per department needs. Safety: 1. Provide laboratory safety training to new hires as well as informing the labs as to proper safety procedures according to our safety manual. Arrange proper disposal of hazardous material. 2. Provide radiation safety instruction to new hires and labs as well as proper radiation safety procedures according to our safety manual. Maintain proper radiation records according to both state and federal regulations. Upkeep of the radiation lab and equipment. Arrange proper disposal of radioactive material. 3. Provide other duty or service needed for the operation of the facility when needed. Qualifications: 1. BS or higher in biological science. 2. Electron microscopy experience and computer skills. 3. Certification from the Microscopy Society of America is a plus. 4. Strong work ethic and reliable 5. Attention to detail 6. Effective communication and time management skills 7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team Physical Requirements: 1. Ability to lifts and /or carries objects weighing up to 25 pounds 2. Ability to stoops and bends 3. Able to perform periods of standing and walking around the building to perform the responsibilities. 4. Ability to reach and grasp with arms and hands above head 5. Requires willingness and ability to handle laboratory waste materials according to mandated procedures. 6. Requires willingness and ability to handle potentially hazardous chemicals, low level radioactive materials, and biological materials using mandated safety protocols and procedures.
