POSITION SUMMARY
The Staff Scientist I is a junior career research position that reports to the principal investigator. The Staff Scientist I conducts research of significant scientific value in the basic or translational sciences and brings specialized skills, knowledge and experience to research programs or core laboratories. This position performs a variety of laboratory research, education and management tasks, including training technical staff, students, fellows and physicians in laboratory procedures and assisting the principal investigator in writing grant applications and publications.
Education
MD or PhD degree in biology or life science related field is required. Candidates with BS in biology will be considered if they have more the 3 years of research experience.
Mininmum Experience
At least two to four years of progressive specialized post-doctoral experience.
Required Skills/Knowledge
Molecular biology: DNA/RNA extraction and quantification, protein isolation, western blotting, ELISA
Molecular biology: Experience with next generation sequencing (e.g., sequencing library preparation) and/or bioinformatics analysis of sequencing data (strongly preferred)
Demonstrated ability to design and lead projects
Ability to lead and manage other lab members (research technicians, research assistants, etc.)
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines.
Previous experience with liquid biopsy analyses (e.g., sequencing of cell free DNA) is preferred but not required.
Responsible Conduct of Research

Plans, conducts and manages research projects within federal and institutional regulations and policies under the direction of the principal investigator
Uses research funds and resources appropriately
Maintains confidentiality of data as required
Meets all annual job-related training and compliance requirements
Laboratory Work
Perform routine tests under the direction of principal investigator or supervisor
Record and check results for completeness and accuracy
Perform tasks that may require familiarity with fundamental techniques and equipment
Compile information from lab notebooks and journals
Following, modifying, and producing new laboratory SOPs
Attend seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques.
Stocking materials and equipment for the lab
Research Planning
Assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures
Assist staff to develop and troubleshoot new techniques and ideas
Record Keeping
Maintain a log of work performed
Prepare charts, graphs, and results of studies; compile and help analyze data
Maintain all required records, reports, statistics, etc.; prepare summary reports as requested
Leadership and Collaboration
Uses accepted methods and techniques, solves well-defined problems and performs specific and limited portions of broader projects under the technical guidance of the principal investigator and the senior staff scientist.
Conducts experiments in the laboratory that include developing new methods, taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling and processing data, and analyzing results.
Conducts research and development of new next generation sequencing clinical assays.
Assists with data analysis and management.
Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals and may provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level; networks primarily within own technical peer group.
