The PhD project is aimed at studying the crosstalk between heparanase, immune cells, and HPV in the pathogenesis of carcinomas caused by these viruses. (DKFZ/Technion Israel cooperation project). Focusing on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), the primary objective of this project is to elucidate the synergistic mechanisms by which heparanases affect immune cells in the tumor microenvironment and thereby the tumor aggressiveness. Given the contribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) to the etiology of HNSCC, this project will study the involvement of heparanase in the HPV transforming capability and the mode by which Hpa2 (a close homolog of heparanase that lacks enzymatic activity, inhibits heparanase activity and regulates genes that promote normal differentiation) may suppress HPV-associated HNSCC. (Ref: Bhattacharya et al Cancer Res. 80:57-68, 2020).
Te opportunity to join a collegial research group and work in an exciting project to be developed in collaboration with the group of Prof. Vlodavsky (Technion Institute, Israel). The DKFZ is the largest cancer research institute in Germany. Together with the University of Heidelberg, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), and the EMBL, the DKFZ provides an outstanding research environment. Key core facilities supporting genomics, proteomics, cytometry, microscopy, and a preclinical research have been established at DKFZ to support a wide range of research projects. Comprehensive training and mentoring program through the Helmholtz International Graduate School.
Applicants should hold a diploma / master degree in biology or life sciences with theoretical and experimental background in cellular biology, molecular biology and biochemistry and have laboratory and analytical skills.
To apply, please submit your CV, a motivational letter, a transcript of records from both bachelor and master studies, proven proficiency in spoken and written English and a list of contact addresses of two referees to Dr. Angel Cid-Arregui (email@example.com).
