The Twomey Lab in the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks a full-time research technician.
Our lab is interested in uncovering the mechanisms of excitatory neurotransmission, protein homeostasis, and the intersection of these two fields, using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), biochemistry, in vitro reconstitution, and biophysical techniques.
Candidates should have, or be about to complete, an undergraduate degree. The candidate should have prior experience in an academic lab, and be familiar with standard lab techniques, particularly molecular biology and cell culture. You will be supporting day-to-day lab work, maintenance, and duties (stocking, placing/receiving orders, helping to set up the lab), in addition to collecting and analyzing data as needed. Prior experience in cryo-EM and protein biochemistry is not necessary but desired. Candidates should also have a passion for or desire to learn about uncovering biology/medicine through structural and biochemical techniques.
Dr. Edward Twomey did his postdoc with Dr. Tom Rapoport at Harvard Medical School, where he showed with cryo-EM that the Cdc48/p97 ATPase complex initiates substrate processing through first unfolding ubiquitin – major mechanistic insight into the ubiquitin proteasome system. Prior to this, during his Ph.D. at Columbia University with Dr. Alexander Sobolevsky and Dr. Joachim Frank, he solved the first structures of AMPA-subtype glutamate receptors in complex with their regulatory subunits and solved the complete gating cycle of the receptors, in addition to showing how toxins modulate AMPA receptors, using cryo-EM. These studies form the basis for our structural understanding of glutamatergic neurotransmission at the post-synaptic membrane and new avenues for small molecule design.
Interested applicants should apply directly to Ed Twomey by sending cover letter (especially indicating research and career interests), C.V., and contact information for three references to: firstname.lastname@example.org
