Experienced research assistant to participate in collaborative basic science research being conducted in the Venkatachalam and Kim labs in the department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the McGovern Medical School.
The Venkatachalam lab (www.utflylab.com) and Kim lab (www.kimlaboratory.com) are seeking an experienced research assistant to participate in a collaborative project focused on the study of mitochondrial biology and bioenergetics in the context of aging, cancer, and neurodegeneration. Model organisms for these studies include worms (C. elegans), flies (Drosophila), and cells of human and mouse origin. The is a 100% research position.
Background and skills:
The RA will work closely with the members of both the Venkatachalam and Kim labs. She/he should be organized, and be either already able to, or interested in, learning how to perform the following experiments:
1. Basic protein biochemistry (Western blots, co-immunoprecipitations etc.)
2. Basic nucleic acid biochemistry (extraction of mRNA and DNA, PCR, qPCR etc.)
3. Cell culture
4. Studies in C. elegans and Drosophila
Strong and demonstrated interest in performing basic bench research is a must. Other requirements include a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a science related field, the ability to work independently, excellent written and oral communication skills, and comfort with MS Excel and Word. The Venkatachalam and Kim labs will provide training in the relevant lab protocols, and will be expected to perform these experiments carefully, and to the satisfaction of Drs. Venkatachalam and Kim.
