The Zhang lab (https://zhanglabnu.com/) in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University is seeking postdoctoral fellows with expertise in chemical biology in general (organic synthesis, proteomics, functional genomics or biochemistry). Postdoctoral fellows are expected to lead projects and gain multidisciplinary training in cutting edge molecular and chemical technologies. The start date is flexible.
The Zhang lab’s research goal is to expand druggable space by developing innovative small molecule-based therapeutic approaches to tackle human diseases that are difficult to treat with conventional therapies. Specifically, the Zhang lab aspires to focus on three research areas: 1) discovery of cancer-specific vulnerabilities that enable the development of truly selective cancer therapy; 2) development of cancer neoantigen modulators as a new drug type for innovative cancer immunotherapy; and 3) development of small molecule degraders targeting ‘undruggable’ transcription factors.
The Zhang lab has approximately 2,000 square feet of newly renovated space and is designed for multidisciplinary research, including biochemistry, proteomics, functional genomics, cell biology, and organic synthesis. The Zhang lab contains multiple components: a main lab with bench space for 20+ researchers, a dedicated room for proteomic mass spectrometry instrumentation, an equipment room for high-throughput assay and fluorescence imaging, a cold room for protein purification, and a BSL-2-certificated tissue culture room. The Zhang lab is equipped with Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid Mass Spectrometer coupled with Vanquish Neo UHPLC System, which is the newest and state-of-the-art mass spectrometer for all types of proteomic experiments.
Northwestern Core Facilities provide the infrastructure necessary to help articulate and explore emerging research questions between the disciplines of chemistry, biology, and medicine. The shared resource facilities include: 1) Developmental Therapeutics Core (DTC): DTC provides the NCI-60 panel to Northwestern investigators and, in addition, has >170 tumor cell lines in its repository. Long-term animal housing is available at Northwestern’s Center for Comparative Medicine Pancoe Vivarium. 2) ChemCore: ChemCore provides researchers with access to industry-level resources for the synthesis of molecular probe and tools compounds, hit-to-lead chemistry, lead optimization medicinal chemistry, and consulting on drug discovery projects. 3) High Throughput Analysis Laboratory (NU-HTA): NU-HTA provides drug discovery research, biochemistry, cell biology, functional genomic screening, and synthetic genetic analysis. The facility is fully equipped with state-of-the-art liquid handling and plate handling systems. NU-HTA has a small molecule library with more than 200,000 compounds, including a collection of ChemBridge DIVERSet and MayBridge with enhanced potential for therapeutic development, protein-protein interaction library, and a collection of FDA-approved drugs.
