Post-doctoral position available immediately at Northwestern University in the Department of Urology in Chicago, IL. The Meeks Lab is looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated applicants holding, or about to obtain, a PhD degree. The applicants should possess a strong interest in basic and translational research. Prior research experience with epigenetics, immunology, or CRISPR screening, in vivo tumor models, spatial profiling, single-cell RNA-Seq and biochemistry is a plus.
Under the direction of Dr. Joshua Meeks, research fellows will work on the genetic, epigenetic, and immune mechanisms in bladder cancer. Our research is focused on bladder cancer as a model system for tumor biology to better investigate tumor development, epigenetic regulation of the tumor and tumor microenvironment and immune response to cancer.
Research projects associated with this fellowship include: 1) gender differences in tumor initiation, progression and response to therapy, 2) resistance to immunotherapy, 3) long read sequencing 4) spatial profiling of and tumor/immune/stromal interactions Our laboratory consists of a diverse group of clinicians and scientists interested in investigation of immune biology in disease.
Minimum qualifications include a strong desire for independent research. Preferred qualifications include experience in bioinformatics (R, python) and animal models. Prospective candidates will have the opportunity to submit publications, as well as gain access to human trial specimens that will contribute to the next generation of therapies.. Northwestern University offers an extremely stimulating and nourishing academic environment, with rich resources to facilitate career development for young scientists in the best city in the US.
What we offer: Our international team offers an open, supportive, dynamic and motivating academic environment with excellent training opportunities with the possibility to work on cutting edge and novel research projects. We use a wide spectrum of methods: biochemistry, cloning, cell culture, qRT-PCR, FACS, ELISA, cell-based assays (proliferation, apoptosis, migration, 3D invasion, organoid culture, shRNA and CRISPR screens, proteomics, transactivation assays, virally-based gene delivery, RNAi and CRISPR silencing, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, image analysis, next generation sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation, single-cell RNA-seq, digital spatial profiling, bioinformatic analysis, animal models and in vivo tumor models as well as tumor biopsies.

We have won a number of external research grants and are involved in several national and international collaborative projects. Significant time is spent developing critical research skills and scientific writing and editing. Potential for training grant and independent funding depending on qualifications
Joshua Meeks, MD, PhD, is the Director of Bladder Cancer Research in the Department of Urology. Dr. Meeks is an Associate Professor of Urology and Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Feinberg School of Medicine, as well as section chief of Robotic Surgery at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. He is an outstanding surgeon-scientist whose singular focus is the diagnosis, treatment, and management of bladder cancer. Dr. Meeks has achieved a national and international reputation for translational research in bladder cancer, working with the Society of Urologic Oncology, American Urologic Association, Society of Immunotherapy, and the International Bladder Cancer Network. He currently leads multiple national and international clinical trials in bladder cancer and has authored more than 70 publications on bladder cancer. He works closely with the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) to advance bladder cancer research in his role as a national scientific advisory board member.
Please send your cover letter, CV, and names of three references to Dr. Joshua Meeks at, firstname.lastname@example.org We are seeking fellows for three years of training.
