Function/Duties of Position
The Department of Behavioral Neuroscience (Costa Lab) is seeking a Senior Research Associate to assist with research projects examining the transcriptional diversity of neurons in the primate amygdala. The research is multidisciplinary, integrating both computational and experimental approaches to identify cell-type specific genetic markers that regulate neural mechanisms of learning and decision making. The successful applicant will develop and apply statistical and computational pipelines required for analyzing single-nuclei RNA sequencing and immunochemistry datasets. Specific duties of the position include:
Data processing and statistical analyses of single-nuclei RNA sequencing datasets using computational tools implemented in R and Python.Apply already existing or write new code (when needed) to execute data analysis, visualize and provide interpretation and context of results of sn-RNAseq data.
Implement single cell/nuclei pipelines for the analysis of transcriptomic datasets.
Collaborate with a team of computational biologists, neuroscientists, and data scientists to develop, iterate and execute innovative strategies for genomic data integration and modeling/prediction.
For frequently used pipelines, making them accessible and user-friendly for experimental scientists
Data processing and statistical analyses of immunohistochemistry image datasets using Python, ImageJ, and MATLAB.
Contribute to manuscript writing and provide documentation and reports of analysis for preparation of manuscripts and lab protocols.
Supervise trainees and lab staff and provide introductory training in computational methods to new lab members or collaborators.
Participate in lab meetings and give work-in-progress presentations as needed.
Doctorate degree in relevant field, or Master’s Degree in relevant field and 5 years of relevant work experience, or Bachelor’s Degree 9 years of relevant work experience
Proficient in the use of the R programming language and statistical computing environment for multivariate statistical analyses
Successful research in a computational branch of the life sciences, demonstrated by first authorship of multiple peer-reviewed publications
Documented record of teaching statistical concepts and the use of statistical tools
Excellent communication skills with the ability to plan, document, analyze and report data; highly motivated and organized, proven capability of time management skills
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of diverse staff, co-workers, investigators
Independence and competence to perform data management and analysis, ability to prioritize work demands and to coordinate and document research findings with other staff
Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties
Quality control and adherence to principles of code review
High level of self-motivation and integrity
Creative, thinks out-side-the-box, in developing fit-for-purpose solutions for data needs
Familiarity with foundational statistical concepts in bioinformatics
Comfortable working alongside expert biostatisticians and neuroscientists and incorporating their suggestions
PhD, MD or MD/PhD in a life science discipline
At least one year of relevant research experience in bioinformatic analysis of large multivariate statistical data sets
Experience submitting jobs in a cluster computing environment
Training in genetics/genomics, computer science, and/or bioinformatics
Proficient in the use of the Python programming language for scientific computing, image processing, and bioinformatic analyses
Familiarity with hardware and software tools necessary for the creation of 3D anatomical models
Able to work independently, to problem solve, to produce clear documentation of work, to produce graphical summaries of data, to contribute to the writing of manuscripts, and grant applications
