The research labs of Emily Davenport in Biology and Terrance Bell in Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology are seeking to jointly hire a Research Technologist. The Research Technologist will split their time 50/50 between the two labs, which both specialize in microbiome research and are located in adjacent buildings.
In the Davenport Lab, the successful applicant will be responsible for generating microbiome and host genomic data from human samples, including fecal samples, gastrointestinal biopsies, and lung samples. Molecular techniques include DNA extraction and PCR on both low and high biomass samples.
In the Bell Lab, the successful applicant will perform lab and greenhouse research on soil microbiomes, and will also conduct associated reporting and data management. Research work will include soil sterilization and treatment with prescribed nutrient additives, mesocosm establishment, soil sampling, DNA extraction, PCR, bacterial cultivation, and in-lab bacterial growth.
In both labs, the successful applicant will assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for lab operations to ensure the safety and efficiency of the laboratory. Additionally, they will coordinate ordering, maintaining appropriate inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, labware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab.
The successful applicant is required to adhere to strict work and reporting timelines, and is expected to communicate frequently with the direct advisor. The successful applicant will possess research skills related to microbiology and molecular biology, and will have strong organizational abilities. Writing skills should be sufficient to clearly communicate project progression and results in the form of reports to the advisor and/or project collaborators.
Application materials should include a cover letter summarizing relevant experience and reasons for interest in the job, along with a CV that includes contact information for two references (name, position, telephone number, and e-mail address). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled. Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher, including at least one year of related research experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 1. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
