Computational Postdoctoral Associate
Carter Lab – The Jackson Laboratory
Bar Harbor, ME
The Carter Lab has an opening for a postdoctoral associate in the computational biology of Alzheimer’s disease. This position is part of an NIH-funded TREAT-AD center, in which our lab plays a leading role in bioinformatics analysis.
The goal of the TREAT-AD consortium (www.treatad.org) is to translate molecular signatures of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease into new treatments. This process encompasses a range of computational and systems biology approaches, including big data analysis through dimensional reduction, inference of disease origin and progression, integration of multiple annotation and data streams to formulate testable hypotheses, and refinement of hypotheses upon collection of additional data. Our collaborative, multi-institutional group is embedded in a large community of researchers focused on data science and stewardship, structural biology, medicinal chemistry, and the neuroscience of disease. The TREAT-AD center is in turn a part of a major open science initiative to understand and treat Alzheimer’s disease that includes the AMP-AD, ADNI, ADSP, and MODEL-AD research consortia. The Carter Lab also has a leading role in MODEL-AD, in which we create new mouse models of late-onset AD for basic research and preclinical testing.
We are especially interested in candidates with systems biology expertise in model organisms who are seeking to apply their innovative ideas in a translational setting. The structure of TREAT-AD enables collaborative follow-up experimentation and refinement of computational hypotheses. We are dedicated to open science and establishing an inclusive culture to expand our vision of scientific progress.
The Jackson Laboratory provides excellent educational and training opportunities for postdoctoral associates. Exceptional candidates are encouraged to apply for the prestigious JAX Scholar award, which supports promising early-career postdoctoral associates conducting cutting edge biomedical and basic biological research at JAX. The award includes an independent research and travel budget and a salary above our standard postdoctoral scale (https://www.jax.org/education-and-learning/pre-and-postdoctoral-program/jax-scholars
To apply, please submit 1) a cover letter outlining research accomplishments and interests, 2) a current CV, and 3) names and contact information for three references.
The successful candidate will perform independent computational analyses of multiple data sets to prioritize molecular hypotheses of Alzheimer’s disease development. They will document and report results to center colleagues for collaborative experimental validation. They will lead efforts to disseminate research results including all data and analysis via publications, data sharing, and presentations to consortium peers and at scientific meetings. Postdocs are also expected to participate in the broader Jackson Laboratory community to foster their career development and progression.
• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, or related field is required;
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills;
• Demonstrates ability to be collaborative across disciplines; and
• Demonstrated writing ability as evidenced by significant contribution/leadership role in bringing a minimum of one 1st author paper from graduate work to publication.
