This opening is a one-year full-time PDF position with a salary of $50,000/year, with the possibility of extension to a second year. The PDF will take the lead in Pakpour Laboratory at UBC to conduct an interdisciplinary research, and mentor other students, towards “Development of an Air Surveillance Tool for Population-Wide COVID-19 Detection and Prediction”. This project has been recently approved by the Government of Canada towards combating Covid-19 (see the appendix for a full description of the project). The successful candidate is expected to possess the following skillset and background:
A PhD Degree in Science or Engineering related to Microbiology/Virology.
Experienced with tissue culturing and molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, etc).
Acquaintance with basic bioinformatics and biostatistical analysis.
Ability to multi-task and work both independently and within a team environment.
Effective oral and written communications, interpersonal and organization skills.
Accuracy and attention to details.

Full summary of the project
Indoor space used by humans is both a place where airborne disease may be transmitted, and an opportunity to measure disease presence to enable prediction of the likely number of respiratory infections in a specific time window. Aerosolized Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains viable in indoor air with an approximately one-hour half-life. Containment of aerosol transmission of SARS-CoV-2 can significantly affect containment of an outbreak. One of the many challenges of this pandemic is tracking the initiation, spread, and changing trends of COVID-19 at the population-level and mapping the distribution and magnitude of COVID-19 in real-time. Apart from pre-exposure prophylaxis or therapeutic treatments, the most vital need is rapidly identifying infected environments and individuals. Clinical diagnostic testing at the individual-level is currently a common approach for all pandemics, but also faces challenges in providing fast and cost-efficient testing of large populations. To overcome this shortfall, here we aim to develop a novel epidemiological tool known as “Built Environment- Based Epidemiology — B2E2” which will aid in containing and mitigating the Covid-19 outbreak at population level. B2E2 will continually quantify viral loads in indoor air for a given enclosed space, simply by applying our portable, easy-to-use, and cost-efficient lab on chip. Our system will also provide an on-going proactive surveillance system, which can aid in monitoring seasonal waves of the current or future viral outbreaks (e.g., Influenza virus). Such tool will allow for the instilment of various preventative and mitigative measures by Canadian Armed Forces commanders and Canadian Public Health Agencies, in order to decrease the social and economic impacts faced by the pandemics.
