ROLE of the POSITION
A postdoctoral position in bioinformatics is available in Dr. Qing Wu’s lab in the Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine was just awarded an $11.4M, 5-year Center of Biomedical Research Excellence P20 Grant from NIH in personalized medicine.
The successful candidate will play a key role in development of research plans, execution, and analysis of projects involving “big data” including electronic medical records, GWAS data, and Federal-funded large cross-sectional data and cohort data. The successful candidate will assist the PI to conduct research including machine learning and statistical modeling, GWAS data imputation and analysis, deep learning and big-data analysis related to personalized medicine in a collaborative medical research setting. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to be promoted to a research faculty.
The successful candidate will work in collaborative teams, both on and off campus, to address critical health and medical issues in the community. These issues include access and affordability of health care and the prevalence of diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, and diabetes. There are opportunities to collaborate with partners with unique capabilities, such as the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, the Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital.
A minimum of a Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D.) is required in bioinformatics, informatics, biostatistics, statistics, computer sciences or a relevant discipline. Additional postdoctoral training in corresponding fields is preferred, but not required. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
· Proven computational skills, programming skills (Python, C/C++, and R), and experience in performing data analyses of NGS data are required.
· Practical experience in genomic data management, high-dimension data analysis is required.
· Knowledge and experience in SAS programming, data analysis and statistical modeling are required.
The successful candidate will have good communication, leadership, writing, and organizational skills and proven ability to work within a team environment. The successful candidate should have strong publication record.
· Experience in machine learning and big data analysis is preferred.
· A background in public health, medicine, biology or a related area of health is preferred.
· Research experience in osteoporosis, fracture and bone density is preferred but not required.
Salary is commensurate with the NIH Postdoctoral stipend level. Position is contingent upon funding.
