Postdoctoral position for modeling protein crowding onlipid bilayers

A postdoctoral position is available modeling the effects of protein crowding at on lipid bilayers beginning 1/1/2021. This project is a collaborative effort between the Rangamani, Holst,and Llewellyn Smith groups at UCSD and the Stachowiak group in UT Austin. The project will focus on developing and implementing coarse-grained and other molecular dynamics models of lipid bilayers and lipid-protein interactions to study the role of protein crowding in membrane bending. Candidates should have demonstrated research productivity, have a strong publication record and have expertise in biophysics, biomechanics, mathematical modeling, and numerical simulations. Biology background is not required; it is expected that the candidate will learn the biological aspects of the system as needed. Applications from candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds are encouraged. The research environment in the department and university-wide is collaborative, providing the fellow with excellent networking and collaborative opportunities.In this particular project, the candidate is expected to work closely with our collaborator at UT-Austin.Postdocs will be encouraged and mentored over time to develop independent research to reflect their own interests. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to work in a collaborative environment and mentor graduate students and undergraduates as needed. They will be encouraged to present their research in national meetings as applicable. Initial appointment is for one year, extendable by mutual agreement and evidence of research progress.
Expectations and required skill sets
•Identifies problems or issues of importance in the functioning of living systems and identifies possible biophysical and biochemical mechanisms underlying their function.
•Creates science-based models integrating biomechanical and biochemical phenomena to quantitatively investigate these mechanisms.
•Gleans information and data from biology literature, while being able to use both analytical and computational skills to derive and formulate model results to be compared to the literature (e.g., molecular biophysics, information processing and signaling networks, self-organization at the cellular and multi-cellular scales, as well as evolution and ecological dynamics)
•Engages with experimentalists to understand data production methods and limitations.
•Writes about research and work in papers to be published in leading, peer-reviewed scientific journals and discussed at leading conferences
•Attends scientific conferences, makes presentations, collaborates with other researchers at this and other institutions
•Mentors and helps teach graduate and undergraduate students•Write proposals to obtain research funding•Performs all other duties as assigned
•Strong research background and publication of peer-reviewed papers in academic journals
•Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduates and grad students in conducting collaborative research•
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as oral presentation skills•Organization and time management skills
•Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection, and analyses
•Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline
•Ability to work in a collaborative environment
•Ability to work independently and professionally with minimal supervision and direction
