The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral Research Associate interested in taking on a challenging role with considerable scope for independent scientific achievement and personal growth.
The UK DRI at Imperial has been established to address a medical research area of the highest importance and future impact. As one of seven national centres of excellence embedded in major UK universities, we intend to transform the diagnosis, treatment and care of people with dementias. The Medical Research Council and charity partners the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK invested £290m in fulfilment of the ambition identified in the Prime Minister’s 2020 Challenge on Dementia.
The research group of Dr Nathan Skene addresses key questions about the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease. In a series of recent publications in Nature Genetics, the lab has demonstrated that single cell RNA-seq data from mice can be used to identify the cell types associated with genetic risk factors for neurodegenerative disease. We aim to develop single cell epigenetic techniques, such as ATAC-seq and CUT&TAG, to enhance our ability to map intergenic loci to cell type specific features.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be expected to help to define specific research programmes within this remit and undertake these in conjunction with colleagues in multi-disciplinary teams. Considerable independence is expected, with anticipation of a growing role in leadership of the research. In addition, you will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to join in attracting external research funding.
You will have prior experience working with genomic/epigenetics methods. A background in neurobiology or immunology would be beneficial but not essential. Experience with flow cytometry, neuroanatomy, and cell culture are also relevant to the project. Familiarity with bioinformatics, R programming, version control and workflow languages would be advantageous.

You should show initiative and independent thinking, possess excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team.
There will be opportunities for supervision of students. Experience in other teaching roles, including lecturing, will be enabled as part of the broad range of career development opportunities that Imperial College makes available to its post-doctoral research staff.
The contract is offered full time, initially for a fixed term until 31 March 2023 with potential for extension for a further five years.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 – £38,566 per annum.
