The Niwa laboratory (https://niwaorg.com/) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is seeking a creative and motivated Researcher II (laboratory research technician).
We aim to investigate how psychosocial stress affects behaviors via altered neuronal function and connectivity in the brain. The ultimate goal of the laboratory’s research is to understand the biological mechanisms by which the endocrine system controls the developmental trajectory of the brain and behavior. By combining mouse behavioral assays, in vivo monitoring of neuronal activities in freely-behaving mice, optogenetic/chemogenetic modulation of neuronal activities, neural circuit tracing, and epigenetic/gene expression analysis, we plan to unravel the underlying mechanisms from the molecular and cellular to the circuitry and behavioral levels.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology offers a strong supportive research environment in both laboratory and clinical settings. Research resources are enriched through the Neuroscience community at UAB.
This person will conduct laboratory research in the field of neurobiology under the direct guidance of the principal investigator. Persons with research experiences using rodents in neurobiology or a related field are suitable for this position. The position will have many opportunities to acquire new knowledge/skills for career development. Under minimal supervision, she/he will do the following tasks;
– Set up and perform routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals. Prepare samples, run assays, conduct cell/tissue culture, perform animal studies, etc.
– Collect, enter, and summarize data.
– Monitor results; detect and report unusual outcomes.
– Assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment and supplies.
– Perform basic statistical data analysis.
– Perform other duties as assigned.
Start date: March 2021 and later.
Interested individuals should send 1) your CV and 2) a brief summary of your research interests and experience including experimental skills. Invitation for the official application will follow if you pass the first screening.
