The Enard lab in the EEB Department at University of Arizona is recruiting one or multiple postdocs interested in working at the interface of biology, ecology, and the population genomics of adaptation. The lab is currently working on genomic adaptation in response to viruses, both in humans and mammalian ecological systems, mainly bats. A recent example of the work done in the lab is the discovery of an ancient coronavirus epidemic more than 20,000 years ago in East Asia.
To study the legacy of ancient viral epidemics in host genomes, we use existing computational tools and we develop our own computational methods. Postdocs in the lab have extensive freedom when it comes to defining how they want to share their time between population genomics computational analyses, ecology field work, and methods development. The lab makes extensive use of machine learning to study genomic adaptation, and postdocs in the lab have the opportunity to learn, or further advance their skills in this area.
More details on current projects and lab members can be found at https://enardlab.com/.
We provide a collaborative environment, with research collaborations in the US (Sudmant Lab at UC Berkeley, Uricchio Lab at Tufts, etc.) and abroad (Etienne Lab in France, Alexandrov Lab in Australia). We have joint lab meetings with the Masel and Gutenkunst labs (population genetics), and with the Barker and Dlugosch labs (ecological genomics). The EEB Department provides a very strong environment for the development of ecological genomics.
We benefit from stable funding for the next five years, but we encourage and help postdocs to get their own fellowships for greater independence. So far we have had great success helping postdocs to get prestigious fellowships. Successful applicants will also benefit from considerable computational resources on campus to speed up their projects.
Applicants must send (1) their CV, (2) a cover letter, and (3) provide the references of their PhD advisor(s) and of current/past postdoc advisor(s) if already doing a postdoc. Applications will be reviewed immediately and the positions will remain open until filled. Ideally applicants should have a good coding and/or quantitative background, but we are open to diverse profiles as long as applicants have a clear motivation to learn and an interest in the research topics.
Dr Enard is a first-generation college student, and we strongly encourage first generation college students and members of underrepresented groups in science to apply.
University of Arizona diversity Statement:At the University of Arizona, we value our inclusive climate because we know that diversity in experiences and perspectives is vital to advancing innovation, critical thinking, solving complex problems, and creating an inclusive academic community. As an Hispanic-serving and American Indian and Alaska Native-serving institution, we translate these values into action by seeking individuals who have experience and expertise working with diverse students, colleagues, and constituencies. Because we seek a workforce with a wide range of perspectives and experiences, we provide equal employment opportunities to applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information. As an Employer of National Service, we also welcome alumni of AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service programs and others who will help us advance our Inclusive Excellence initiative aimed at creating a university that values student, staff and faculty engagement in addressing issues of diversity and inclusiveness.
