Dr. Francois Jean is currently leading five major international research initiatives to discover novel antivirals for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Dr. Jean’s COVID-19 interdisciplinary team is one of Canada’s best-positioned consortia to rapidly identify lead drug candidates using state-of-the art molecular virology tools and organoid-based screening platforms. The main objective of Dr. Jean’s new cross-disciplinary team-based research is to contribute to the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic by identifying drug candidates for SARS-CoV-2 infection either tested alone or in combination using human organoid-based screening platforms with the goal of identifying synergistic drug combinations.
The successful applicant will perform preclinical studies of novel SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 candidate therapeutics using 2D- and 3D- cell culture and human organoids. Research findings obtained by the postdoctoral fellow will be critical for clinical and public health responses and development of a therapeutic armamentarium for COVID-19 and other emerging pathogenic coronaviruses. The successful applicant will join a cross-disciplinary research environment at The UBC Life Sciences Institute with state-of-the-art CFI funded infrastructure, including one of the largest university-based containment level 3 (CL3) facilities in the world and founded by Dr. Jean. Using the wide network of connections and collaborations of the principal investigator, and extensive biomedical resources and state-of-the-art equipment at the UBC Life Sciences Institute, the candidate will be able to build on the existing COVID-19 funded research of Jean lab to quickly start up the preclinical studies on newly discovered SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 candidate therapeutics by Dr. Jean’s team. The position will provide a unique opportunity for mentoring trainees, supervising technicians and interacting with industry. This is an excellent platform to receive outstanding training to gain the important skills for a successful biomedical research career in academia or industry. This full-time grant funded position with the University of British Columbia, Life Sciences Institute, allows the candidate to flourish under the guidance of an experienced mentor.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a leadership role in the Jean lab, and will be reporting directly to Dr. François Jean who is the primary investigator of the laboratory.
