The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral scholars to join a new joint project between laboratories at the Broad Institute and Danish universities to build a Human Gene Regulation Map.
This new effort will seek to build comprehensive maps of gene regulation in the human genome as a resource for uncovering biological mechanisms on common genetic diseases, with an initial focus on cell types relevant to cardiometabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes. We aim to combine recent advances in genomics, molecular biology, single-cell analysis, and stem cell models with approaches in computational biology and machine learning to identify fundamental rules of gene regulation.
Description of the scientific environment
The lab of Robin Andersson focuses on genomics and computational/statistical modeling of transcriptional regulation based on large-scale sequencing data. Our main aims are to characterize and better understand the activities of enhancers and their roles in larger regulatory domains (see e.g. Andersson et al. 2014, Nature; Rennie et al., 2018, Nature Communications; Andersson and Sandelin 2020, Nat Rev Genet). The Andersson lab is based in a highly collaborative environment at the Bioinformatics Centre in the Section for Computational and RNA Biology, which is currently composed of 12 strong research groups. The Department of Biology is located at the Biocenter in central Copenhagen, Denmark. Due to its close proximity to the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) as well as the Faculty of Health and Medical Science, collaborations across disciplines, groups and institutes are a natural part of the efforts in the lab.
Project description
We are seeking a Postdoc to develop novel computational and probabilistic methods to model enhancer activity, enhancer-gene regulation and the interplay between regulatory elements within larger regulatory domains, based on perturbation, single cell and genomics data generated within the Center and within the lab of Robin Andersson. Specific focus will be to integrate transcription initiation data into modeling of gene regulation, and to probabilistically resolve regulatory domains based on single-cell measurements.

Formal requirements
We are seeking a genuinely motivated individual with a PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a comparable field with extensive experience in the analyses of high-throughput sequencing data. Theoretical understanding and practical experiences with machine learning, statistical modeling, and statistical learning techniques are expected from the applicant. Importantly, the applicant should have a strong interest in transcriptional regulation and a desire to work on an interdisciplinary and highly collaborative project. Continuous scientific discussions and a strong dedication for ongoing research questions within the group also require proactive participation and enthusiasm for problem solving.
