The Maisel Lab in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland –
College Park is currently recruiting candidates for an NIH funded postdoctoral research position.
The Maisel Lab’s research integrates materials science, immunology, mucosal barrier physiology,
and drug delivery to achieve our long-term research goal to design nanoparticles and in vitro
model systems to take advantage of and study the interface between biological barriers and
biomaterials. We are particularly interested in understanding how the lymphatic system responds
to physiological and pathological cues at mucosal surfaces, and how we can take advantage of
the natural transport functions of the lymphatics to deliver therapeutics to modulate the immune
response. For more information, please visit: http://maisellab.umd.edu/
The available postdoctoral project will involve working on ongoing projects on in vitro model
development as well as developing new directions in this area. Particular emphasis will be placed
on designing in vitro model systems of lymphatic vessels, mucosal surfaces, and integration of
the two for more complex model systems. Ideal candidates should have prior experience with
designing in vitro models, particularly using microfluidic systems. Candidates should be
independently motivated, collaborative, interested in the using engineering tools to answer
biological questions, and have excellent written and oral communication skills, which are
demonstrated through their publication and presentation record. Applicants should hold a Ph.D.
in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or a related field.
Compensation for this position will be based on NIH guidelines and will include a competitive
benefits and retirement package offered by the University of Maryland. Postdoctoral researchers
are eligible for renewable annual contracts with the expectation of completing 2-4 years of
postdoctoral training. Developing new research directions, pursuing research in personal areas
of interest, and applying for independent funding will be highly encouraged.
Interested applicants should assemble the following: 1) letter of interest, 2) CV, and 3) list of
references with contact information. The letter of interest should describe the candidate’s current
research experience, research interests, career goals, and a preferred start date. Please send
the application as a single PDF file to firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Postdoctoral Application’ in the
subject line. The position will remain open until filled.
The University of Maryland, College Park complies with all applicable federal and state regulations
regarding nondiscrimination and affirmative action; all applicants will receive full consideration
Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. A prior criminal
conviction or convictions will not automatically disqualify a finalist from employment in the position.
The University of Maryland has made the safety of our students, faculty and staff, and our
surrounding communities a top priority. As part of that commitment, the University System of
Maryland (USM) recently announced that students, faculty, and staff on USM campuses this fall,
including UMD, are required to be vaccinated against COVID. As a prospective and/or a new
employee at UMD, you will be required to comply with the University’s vaccination protocol. Proof
of full vaccination will be required before the start of employment in order to work at any University
of Maryland location. Prospective or new employees may seek a medical or religious exemption
to the vaccination requirement at return.umd.edu and must have an approved exemption prior to
the start of their employment. Failure to provide proof of vaccination or to obtain approval for a
medical or religious exemption will result in the offer of employment being rescinded.
