The Reinke lab in the department of molecular genetics at the University of Toronto has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow. Our lab is interested in host-pathogen interactions, intergenerational immunity, and evolution of parasites and immunity. We mostly use C. elegans as a model host to investigate infections by the prevalent intracellular eukaryotic parasite microsporidia. These parasites have the smallest eukaryotic genomes (some with only ~2000 proteins!) and are a fascinating system for exploring pathogen evolution.
Recent work from the lab has discovered an immune response that is transferred between generations, a host factor that facilitates cell invasion, inhibitors of microsporidia proliferation and invasion, and a database of microsporidia attributes. We use a variety of experimental and computational research methods including genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, and biochemistry. Potential projects include determining the mechanisms of inherited immunity, high-throughput approaches for identifying genetic variants that influence disease susceptibility, and determining mechanisms of microsporidia host-cell invasion. We are open to candidates bringing new ideas and techniques to the lab. My lab aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment to allow the candidate to achieve their scientific and career goals. We are part of a dynamic department of over 100 research groups working in a variety of diverse areas with many opportunities for collaborations.
We encourage candidates with a Ph.D. (or soon to obtain a Ph.D.) to apply by sending their CV, including contact information of 2-3 references, and a brief cover letter explaining previous research, current interests, career goals, and desired start date. We especially encourage applications from members of historically underrepresented groups in science. The position is for 2-3 years with the possibility for renewal. Please see our website for more information on our group and the research that we do: https://www.reinkelab.org/
