Postdoctoral Associate Full-time
The Chow Lab in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City is recruiting a postdoctoral research associate interested in developing precision medicine approaches for rare diseases. We have a number of projects focused on identifying modifier genes and therapeutic small molecules, with special focus on personalized therapies. We work on a number of different rare diseases including, NGLY1 deficiency, PIGA deficiency, DPAGT1 deficiency, retinitis pigmentosa, and others. There are opportunities to work in any of these projects using drug screens, modifier screens & functional analyses in cells & flies. Our projects range from full computational to full wet lab to a mixture of both. This is a great opportunity for a postdoc to lead and drive several of these projects. There will also be opportunities to develop independent projects aligning with the broad goals of the Chow Lab. All of our postdocs have been successful in obtaining independent funding.
We collaborate with patient advocacy groups and industry. We also work closely with clinicians and genetic counselors, meet regularly with our rare disease clinic and new NICU sequencing initiative, and model newly discovered rare diseases. We encourage postdocs to engage with any or all of these opportunities to enrich their training. Candidates with a strong desire to gain a clinical view of precision medicine while still working at the bench can apply for a number of training grants that provide clinical experience, including our NHGRI Genomic Medicine Training Grant.
Recent postdocs in the Chow Lab have been awarded independent fellowships and successfully moved on to careers of their choice in industry and academia.
We are especially keen on recruiting scientists from minoritized backgrounds. We have a vibrant SACNAS community and we continue to build new support systems for all trainees.
Starting pay will be significantly above the NIH minimum.
Required Qualifications:
1) Ph.D. in genetics, cell biology, pharmacology, or related field
Desired Qualifications (one or more):
1) Experience with Drosophila
2) Experience with drug screens
3) Knowledge of cell biology or biochemistry
