The lab of Dr. Jian Zhou at UT Southwestern Medical Center is looking for postdoctoral fellows interested in computational biology and machine learning. The current focus of our lab is developing deep learning-based methods for understanding how the genome operates at the sequence level, especially decoding the regulatory programs from genomic sequences. We aim to gain a comprehensive understanding and accurate predictive capabilities for chromatin, 3D genome structure, and transcription based on genomic sequence, and work toward realizing the goal of a precise computational model of the genome. Other research directions involve single-cell genomics and cancer genomics. Our research style also has an emphasis in the development of machine learning methodologies, and here you will have the chance to not only apply but also develop novel machine learning / deep learning techniques.
Dr. Zhou has published many papers that contribute to the field of deep learning in genomics, which include:
• Predicting effects of noncoding variants with deep learning-based sequence model (Nature Methods, 2015)
• Deep learning sequence-based ab initio prediction of variant effects on expression and disease risk (Nature Genetics, 2018)
• Whole-genome deep learning analysis identifies contribution of noncoding mutations in autism (Nature Genetics, 2019)
Our newest work, described in the preprint “Sequence-based modeling of genome 3D architecture from kilobase to chromosome-scale” enabled for the first time prediction of 3D genome structure at all spatial scales from kilobase to whole-chromomsome.

Ideal candidates should have Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a related field at the expected start time and have a strong computational background. Previous research experience in genomics or machine learning is preferred. For strong candidates with either computational or biology background, extensive knowledge of the other field is not required.
