Job Summary:
To prepare, set-up, take-down, and maintain laboratories and laboratory materials associated with a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the Department of Biology. To provide skilled, experienced technical services and assistance in the daily functioning of the teaching laboratories.
Organizational Status:
The position reports to the Laboratory Program Manager, Department of Biology. The technician interacts with the Lab Program Manager, other technical support staff in the Department of Biology, Faculty Lab Coordinators, Graduate and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, and both undergraduate and graduate students.

Consequence of Error/Impact of Decisions:
Student and laboratory safety is paramount. Failure to follow safety guidelines could result in personal injury or loss of equipment. Improper time management could lead to delays in laboratories and adversely affect the delivery and/or outcomes of the laboratories. Poorly maintained equipment could cause injury to students or be detrimental to the outcome of experiments causing loss of time and valuable research information. Position is subject to working under pressure and to meeting deadlines with a maximum number of interruptions. Frequently, quick decisions must be made. Lack of judgement or errors will negatively affect teaching effectiveness and may have budgetary consequences.
Supervision Received:
This position reports to the Laboratory Program Manager, but receives minimal supervision. Employee will be expected to execute their assigned tasks independently. This position may receive direction from other laboratory staff and faculty that they are assisting. The Department of Biology Head or Lab Program Manager may direct the employee to purchase certain items or to report problems.
Supervision Given:
No teaching or formal supervisory duties are associated with this position; however, there is considerable interaction with students.
This position routinely requires training, demonstrating, and assisting a variety of students in the operation of equipment used in microbiology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. This may include graduate students, Graduate and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, undergraduate honour's project students, undergraduate work-study students and undergraduate students.
