To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
You will be part of a research group under the Unit for Cardiovascular and Nutritional Epidemiology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine – a department at Karolinska Institutet with a long tradition of groundbreaking research in epidemiology, biostatistics, occupational and environmental medicine, toxicology and physiology. The research group's work is focused on increasing knowledge about the causes of chronic diseases, mainly cardiovascular diseases. Our research is epidemiological and uses data from cohorts, questionnaire data and biomarkers, as well as information from population and health registries. Women and men are usually studied separately, citing the fact that gender and biological sex can influence the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular diseases. Within the research group and within the unit, we have a good collaboration and a lot of space is given for stimulating research discussions.
Completing a doctoral education involves dedicating yourself to a research project under the guidance of a group of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. The research work includes scientific writing and oral presentations of research results in various contexts. The doctoral student also participates in courses and writes a thesis. After completing their doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet, the student is expected to have developed advanced knowledge in medical science, scientific methodology and cutting-edge expertise in a specific research area. For this project, the student will use research tools in epidemiology and biostatistics to investigate the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and pharmacological treatment with estrogen supplementation in relation to the risk of future chronic disease, as well as cardiovascular risk. The work in the project will be characterized by collaboration with colleagues within and outside Karolinska Institutet. During the doctoral period, the doctoral student is expected to contribute, to some extent, to teaching in epidemiology and other public health-related subjects.
