To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Division of Infectious Diseases at the Department of Medicine Solna performs research on a wide range of infectious diseases using clinical, epidemiological and experimental approaches. Anna Färnert's research group focuses on the clinical and immunological aspects of malaria and other infections.
The aim of this PhD project is to increase our understanding of the mechanisms influencing clinical outcomes in malaria infections. The project focuses on identifying immune responses and biomarkers associated with disease severity in malaria. As a PhD student, you will perform all stages of the project, including data and sample collection in close collaboration with the clinic, sample handling, experimental work and data analyses. You will develop original research ideas, plan and perform experimental lab work, analyze data, write scientific articles and present scientific results.

The group is seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student. The candidate must hold a master of science (MSc) or equivalent in a related field. Previous experience in immunology, molecular biology and bioinformatics within malaria or other infections is a merit. Previous experience of performing laboratory analyses is a requirement. Work with human samples in collaboration with healthcare is meritorious. The candidate is expected to be well organized and able to work independently. The project is pursued in an interdisciplinary environment with national and international collaborations with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are a requirement. Fluency in English is mandatory. Proficiency in Swedish is considered a merit.
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
