The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The doctoral student will be part of a team led by Dr Viktor Ahlqvist, focusing on perinatal epidemiology and advanced epidemiological methods. The group leverages nationwide administrative and clinical data to address pressing clinical and public health challenges. The environment is analytically rigorous and collaborative, with strong emphasis on computational methods with translational relevance.
The doctoral project is embedded within the larger 'OffTheCharts' research programme, which aims to address inequalities in maternal and fetal health among migrant gravidas by generating clinically relevant evidence using Swedish nationwide registry data. The project combines epidemiological evaluation of clinical standards with modern predictive modelling to assess and improve clinical tools in diverse populations. The doctoral student will be expected to lead and contribute to multiple research studies within this framework, including data management, statistical analyses, and dissemination of findings through scientific publications and presentations. Over the course of the PhD, the student will develop expertise in perinatal epidemiology and register-based research, alongside advanced training in statistical modelling, epidemiological methods, and the ethical considerations of population-based research.
