California Poison Control System
The California Poison Control System (CPCS) was founded in 1997 to centralize poisoning advice and prevention services in California. The mission of CPCS is to prevent an increase in non-fatal poisonings and poisoning deaths, in conjunction with saving Californians millions of dollars in unnecessary health care cost. Serving all Californians through a single, toll free number, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, CPCS is the largest single provider of poison control services in the United States. CPCS leads the state as the primary resource for poison education, prevention, and treatment for the general public and health care professionals. CPCS operates four call center divisions throughout California in Sacramento, Fresno/Madera, San Francisco and San Diego. The Poison Hotline provides service to the general public and health care professionals on poisoning exposures, handling approximately 700 calls daily. It provides additional special services and has a health education program. CPCS supports teaching and research, in collaboration with the University of California and partners. CPCS is located in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy in the UCSF School of Pharmacy, which is a world-renowned school that has led in NIH funding among pharmacy schools for 45 years.
