Environmental Science University Teacher

The Faculty of Biosciences and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki, Viikki Campus, is seeking an environmental science university teacher for a temporary position at the Department of Environmental Sciences from August 1, 2026 (or as agreed) to May 31, 2030. The subject area is environmental sciences, and the teaching languages are Finnish and English. The main duties of the university teacher include research-based teaching and tasks related to the planning and implementation of teaching in both the Finnish-language Undergraduate Program in Environmental Sciences and the English-language Master’s Program in Environmental Change in the Specialty of Climate Change. The proportion of teaching duties is 70–90% of the annual working time. The university teacher will strengthen environmental education at the faculty, develop the subject area together with other program teachers, act as a guiding teacher, and supervise theses. In addition, they will teach in courses coordinated by other teachers and act as a second responsible teacher in the undergraduate seminar conducted twice a year. Our undergraduate and master’s programs offer a broad knowledge base where different areas of environmental science are integrated in a multidisciplinary way. Teaching emphasizes understanding the ecosystem impacts of human activities, their societal consequences, and the development of sustainable solutions to contemporary environmental challenges. We are looking for a person with a relevant higher university degree and teaching experience. We especially value: pedagogical training and the ability to use diverse teaching methods. Skills in producing high-quality online learning materials. Experience in coordinating and developing seminar teaching. Recent evidence of independent research and publication activities. Strong methodological skills and an interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues. At the University of Helsinki, teaching skills are assessed when fulfilling teaching and research duties. Candidates shortlisted for the position will be asked to provide a teaching sample in Finnish. Successful performance in the role requires proficiency in Finnish and English; knowledge of Swedish is considered an advantage. The candidate should also have good collaboration and interaction skills, an interest in working in a diverse and multilingual environment, and in interdisciplinary groups. Why us? The work is supported by the teaching and research staff of the department and faculty, as well as the administrative and technical staff at the Viikki campus. The salary is based on the university’s salary system for teaching and research staff, levels 4–5, with an additional component based on individual performance. The total salary is approximately 3400–4200 euros per month. The position is filled on a six-month trial period.
