The Department of Biology at Indiana University Bloomington invites applications for a research technician position in the laboratory of Dr. Maria de la Paz Fernandez. The Fernandez Lab studies the neuronal basis of behavior, with a focus on circadian rhythms and sleep biology. More information about the lab can be found at https://fernandez.lab.indiana.edu/index.html.
This position is initially for two years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and mutual interest. The research technician will play a key role in supporting the lab’s research program and in mentoring trainees.
The successful candidate will design and execute Drosophila genetic crosses to support ongoing research projects and will perform and analyze experiments related to the neuroanatomy of clock neurons and sleep–wake cycles in Drosophila. The position also involves managing and maintaining a collection of Drosophila genetic strains, including upkeep of the associated database. The research technician will meet weekly with the principal investigator to set experimental goals and review results, attend weekly lab meetings, and occasionally present data or lead discussions of relevant research papers. Additional responsibilities include supervising and training undergraduate students in the lab and overseeing general laboratory operations such as placing orders and managing inventory.
Applicants should be recent bachelor’s or master’s graduates with a degree in a STEM field, preferably Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, or a related discipline. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and good interpersonal skills are essential. At least one year of part-time research experience is required. Prior experience working with Drosophila is preferred but not required.
To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter describing their research and educational background, career goals, and interest in the position; a current curriculum vitae; and the names and contact information for three references.
