Project Title: Morphological and functional bases of color vision in Enyalius lizards: analysis of rhodopsin (RH1) expression patterns in all-cone retinas and measurements of the spectral sensitivity of visual photopigments and oil droplets.
Research Area: Visual Neuroscience
Number of Open Positions: 1
Principal Investigator: Dora Fix Ventura
Institution / Unit: University of São Paulo, Psychology Institute
Location: Av. Professor Mello Moraes, 1721, Block A, Room D9. Department of Experimental Psychology, Institute of Psychology, University of São Paulo. São Paulo, SP, Brazil
Start Date: August 01, 2026
Application Deadline: April 01, 2026
Abstract: Recent evidence indicates that Enyalius lizards exhibit intersexual variation in the organization of the visual system, possibly associated with differential habitat use by males and females. This project will investigate whether such differences extend to the spectral sensitivity of visual pigments and to the functional response of the visual system in Enyalius perditus, assessed through microspectrophotometry (MSP) and electroretinography (ERG). Additionally, the patterns of expression and coexpression of the opsins RH1 and RH2 in the retinas of males and females will be analyzed.
Applicants must hold a PhD obtained within the last seven years in Science, Biological Sciences, or related fields, with emphasis on visual neuroscience or experimental psychology. Priority will be given to candidates with previous experience in retinal cellular morphology, application of immunohistochemistry techniques, in situ collection and handling of lizards, MSP, ERG. Experience in data analysis and scientific writing is also required.
Benefits:
Application: Interested candidates should send their curriculum vitae and a cover letter directly to Professor Dora Fix Ventura including “PD2 FAPESP 2022/00191-0” in the subject line.
