The Melanoma Molecular discovery laboratory investigates melanoma, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic vulnerabilities. Our focus includes the study of oncogenes, tumor suppressors and genomic instability. This Junior Specialist position offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge genomics approaches and functional studies in a collaborative environment within the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mission Bay and Mt. Zion. The research projects are focused on melanoma disease mechanisms and involve culturing cell lines, quantitating mRNA and protein levels, CRISPR perturbations, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloning. Applicants who intend to participate in research before applying to graduate school are encouraged to apply. The specialist will perform molecular biology (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, Western blot) and staining techniques for tissues and cells (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, light microscopy, etc). The mission of the Department of Dermatology is to be a world leader in the care of patients with skin diseases through outstanding clinical service, education, training, and research.
Required Qualifications: Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience. Scientific curiosity and a desire to contribute. Organizational skills with ability to work independently. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to adhere to all campus safety policies. Demonstrated motivation and conscientiousness. Attention to detail and ability to clearly document experiments. Knowledge of molecular biology and genetics. Previous experience using artificial intelligence to analyze tissue images
Preferred Qualifications: Previous laboratory research experience. Familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation.
Physical Requirements: Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances. Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
