Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Lab Manager will be responsible for helping to support collaborative research within the Overduin Laboratory in areas including discovery of small molecule ligands of protein targets by generating, maintaining and screening molecular ligands, generating overexpression constructs and mutations, purifying proteins, and using polymers for solubilization of proteins in nanodiscs, as well as supporting research services including analysis of protein-ligand interactions using biophysical instruments funded by a CFI JELF grant and located within the Molscreen facility. These systems are used for analysis of proteins, drug-like molecules and lipids, for user training, offering of experimental protocols and scientific expertise in biochemistry research. The Lab Manager is responsible for coordinating efficient operations to ensure optimal user access to the facilities within the Overduin Laboratory and the Molscreen facility.
Responsible for the effective operation of the Overduin Laboratory and Molscreen facility, which currently support the research activities of local and external users. Coordination and scheduling of samples and user sessions to ensure the efficient and effective use of the biophysical systems. In addition, the position works with students and research scientists who access these systems. Such individuals may require on-site training and troubleshooting to assist them with the analysis of their samples including proteins, lipids and nanodiscs.
Responsible for the effective operation of the biophysical systems including:
Help to administer the Molscreen facility budget through the generation of income via training and user fees on instruments listed in (2), communicating with prospective new and established local users, external users and collaborators.
Directly responsible for upkeep of the infrastructure listed in (2).
Supervision of students, technicians and postdocs who may occasionally access the equipment listed in (2).
PhD or equivalent degree in biochemistry, chemistry or structural biology,
At least five (5) years of hands-on research experience involving analysis of proteins and/or polymer-based nanoparticles supported by a track-record of publications,
Experience in supervision of students,
Facility management skills including tracking and projecting usage and accounts,
Demonstrated skills in the optimization of analytical services and protocols.
Experience in financial and administrative management of research facility,
Experience in operating and maintaining analytical equipment and working with suppliers,
Experience in protocols for safety and compliance of analytical research facilities,
Excellent communication skills for provision of timely information and advice to users,
Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills,
Excellent written and oral presentation skills,
Ability to provide training to a range of users including students, technicians, and post-doctoral fellows.
