Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
This position is responsible for managing the PI's research laboratory under occasional supervision. The laboratory examines ion homeostasis (primarily calcium, magnesium, and phosphate) in preclinical models, including genetically modified mice, as well as primary, immortalized, and stem cell cultures. The incumbent conducts complex experiments, performs advanced data analysis, maintains a variety of laboratory and departmental equipment, and serves as a resource to department members. Departmental duties include oversight and maintenance of shared equipment and instructing users on its safe and appropriate operation.
Lead lab operations & space management: Oversee research lab activities, supervise trainees (graduate students, PDFs, summer and undergraduate students), and manage the opening, operation, and closeout of wet laboratory spaces.
Support research design, execution & analysis: Collaborate with PIs on project development and protocol design; conduct experimental procedures, perform complex data analyses, and interpret/report findings.
Perform specialized laboratory procedures: Conduct advanced in vitro and in vivo techniques (e.g., membrane isolation, perfusion studies, Xenopus oocyte assays, molecular analyses, cell culture, Ussing chamber and flux studies).
Manage lab infrastructure & compliance: Oversee shared equipment, chemical and radioisotope inventories, radiation monitoring, and regulatory reporting; serve on the departmental safety committee.
Train & mentor personnel: Instruct users in specialized techniques, equipment operation, safety protocols, and laboratory management practices.
Procurement & resource coordination: Evaluate and purchase equipment and specialty items; coordinate animal experiment scheduling and maintain shared research infrastructure.
