Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.
A position as laboratory technician is now available in the Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core Facility, Unit of Integrative Metabolomics.
As part of the expansion of our analytical core facility, we are seeking a laboratory technician to work in the Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core Facility (KI-SMMS) at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet. In this role, you will perform your work with a high degree of independence, executing tasks based on applied guidelines and established practice within our facility.
Your duties will encompass the entire analytical pipeline—including sample and instrument preparation, data processing, and reporting. While you will work within existing routines and frameworks, the tasks are often analytical and evaluative in nature. For more complex cases or novel challenges, you will collaborate with and anchor your decisions with a superior.
You will have the opportunity to work in a modern custom-built analytical facility with multiple mass spectrometers and associated equipment. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic self-starter to play a critical role in executing technical protocols for small molecule mass spectrometry, as well as contributing to the development of new analytical workflows. As part of our research group, you will see your work translated into high-profile scientific discoveries across Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, and the broader scientific community.
The successful applicant is a highly motivated individual who possesses the theoretical and practical knowledge required to manage diverse analytical tasks, with a special focus on LC-MS/MS analyses. We are looking for the following skills:
Education: Minimum of undergraduate training in analytical chemistry, biomedical analyses, or equivalent extensive experience within the field.
Technical Autonomy: Working knowledge of analytical laboratory instrumentation and general data handling, with the ability to perform tasks independently according to set routines. Specific experience in LC-MS/MS for small molecule analysis is a must.
Communication: Proficiency in written and spoken English, with the social skills required to work both as a self-sufficient “case officer” of your projects and as a collaborative team member. We place great importance on personal suitability.
Organization: Proven ability to establish priorities, evaluate complex data, and meet deadlines.
Characteristics regarded as an advantage:
Advanced Education: A Master of Science (MSc) related to analytical chemistry or a relevant biomedical field.
Technical Expertise: Experience with developing small molecule LC-MS/MS methods.
Data Science: Working knowledge of statistical analyses and LC-MS-relevant programming languages (R and/or Python).
