The Department of Game Design is located at Uppsala University – Campus Gotland, an international campus situated in the World Heritage city of Visby. Here, the broad range of programmes and strong research environments of a full-scale university are combined with the close and unique study environment characteristic of a smaller campus. The Department is part of the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. It conducts high-quality education and research. Each year, the Department educates approximately 450 full-time equivalent students, about half of whom are international. Around 45 staff members work at the Department across various professional categories. The Department offers first- and second-cycle education in game design and game development, including courses in graphics, project management, and game programming. All teaching is conducted in English.
Duties: The position includes teaching, course coordination, course development, and administrative duties. Teaching is conducted within the Game Design programmes, primarily in courses in game programming in C++, with a particular focus on modern C++ and contemporary development practices in game programming. The education is project-based and practice-oriented, where students develop games in iterative projects focusing on game mechanics, AI systems, real-time architectures, and programming methodologies. Teaching includes lectures, supervision, and continuous feedback throughout the students' development processes. The work also includes developing courses and programmes, with significant opportunities to influence course content, structure, and pedagogical methods. This is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues in game design, graphics, and project management. The duties further include actively following developments in game development, programming, and pedagogy, as well as contributing to the long-term development of the Department and its educational offerings. This includes, among other things, the Department's work on integrating modern development tools and workflows into teaching, including an exploratory and reflective use of AI-based tools in teaching and development work. The position requires physical presence at the workplace.
Requirements: To be eligible for the position, applicants must hold at least a Bachelor's degree with a specialisation in computer science, software engineering, or game design with solid knowledge of game programming. A minimum of ten weeks of higher education pedagogical training, or equivalent knowledge, is required, as well as documented pedagogical proficiency and the general ability required to perform the duties of the position well. If special circumstances apply, the required pedagogical training may be completed during the first two years of employment. The position further requires that the applicant is thorough, responsive, and able to work independently, with strong analytical skills and good cooperative abilities. Applicants must have a very good ability to teach in English and a very good ability to express themselves orally and in writing in English.
Additional qualifications: Documented experience of teaching and administrative work at a university or university college within game design, game development, game programming, or an equivalent area. Strong experience and broad knowledge in general game programming, game-oriented AI, and experience with tools programming for games. Experience from professional game design practice and/or work within the games industry. Experience of project-oriented working methods. Particular emphasis will be placed on pedagogical proficiency, meaning that an applicant with stronger pedagogical merits will be given preference over an applicant with stronger scientific merits.
