Mimetics is a data analytics company based in North Carolina’s Research Triangle dedicated to using dynamic gene expression to help clients accelerate development of bioproduction manufacturing processes such as biofuels fermentations. Using high-resolution, time-series RNA-sequencing data, we extract and analyze transcriptional data to identify new ways to improve yield, efficiency, and stability in bioproduction.

Backed by multi-year support from the U.S. Department of Energy, Mimetics is expanding its expression database and computational platform for yeast systems. About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Scientist in Computational Biology to lead development of scalable bioinformatics pipelines and analytical frameworks for our RNA-seq–based fermentation database.

This role will serve as the technical and scientific lead for computational projects, guiding data architecture, model development, and biological interpretation in close collaboration with experimental scientists.

The ideal candidate combines strong computational expertise with a solid understanding of molecular biology, enjoys building robust systems from the ground up, and thrives in an innovative and unstructured R&D environment.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific and Analytical

• Design, develop, and apply computational methods to analyze time-series RNA-seq and related omics datasets.
• Identify transcriptional patterns, regulatory modules, and molecular signatures linked to fermentation performance.
• Collaborate with experimental scientists to guide data-driven hypothesis generation and validation.

Technical and Leadership

• Lead development and maintenance of reproducible bioinformatics pipelines for NGS data processing, storage, and analysis.
• Integrate, test, and optimize algorithms leveraging statistical and machine learning approaches for biomarker discovery.
• Develop scalable data infrastructure and APIs to support our internal expression database.
• Implement best practices in version control, documentation, and code review for long-term maintainability.
• Hire, mentor, and supervise junior developers and computational staff to support ongoing pipeline development and maintenance.

Required Qualifications

• PhD, or MS with 2+ years (or equivalent industry experience) in Computational Biology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field
• Hands-on experience with NGS data analysis (especially RNA-seq) and standard bioinformatics workflows
• Proficiency in Python and/or R, and comfort working in Linux/Bash environments
• Strong foundation in statistics, data modeling, and machine learning
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated initiative, technical leadership, and ability to collaborate across disciplines

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience hiring, mentoring, or supervising junior developers or analysts
• Working knowledge of yeast biology and genomics
• Experience with workflow management systems (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake)
• Familiarity with relational databases (SQL) and schema design
• Experience configuring and deploying pipelines in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or similar)
• Familiarity with Docker, Git, and CI/CD workflows
