PhD Candidate (f/m/x) – Spatial Metabolomics & Imaging Mass Spectrometry

The Research Unit Analytical Pathology at Helmholtz Munich focuses on the development and application of advanced mass spectrometry-based methods for the spatially resolved analysis of biological systems. A particular emphasis is placed on imaging mass spectrometry to investigate molecular distributions in tissues and organs and to relate these findings to physiological and pathophysiological processes. The group's work combines methodological innovation with translational biomedical research.

Your Tasks

• You will develop and conduct imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) experiments to investigate metabolic processes in tissues
• You will work on the further development of methods in the field of spatial metabolomics (e.g., sample preparation, measurement parameters, workflows)
• You will analyze and integrate complex datasets using statistical and bioinformatics methods (e.g., Python, R)
• You will interpret results in the context of systemic metabolic processes and use them to develop new scientific questions
• You will present and publish your results and actively collaborate within an interdisciplinary team

Your Profile

• Master's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, or a related field
• Interest in metabolic research and analytical methods
• Initial experience in experimental or data-driven research
• Good English skills and a passion for scientific collaboration

Desirable qualifications

• Experience with mass spectrometry, metabolomics, or imaging techniques
• Knowledge of data analysis (e.g., Python or R)
• Experience with tissue analysis or histological methods

Remuneration and social security benefits are based on the German Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees at Federal Level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of receiving an allowance if the applicable conditions are met. The position has an (initial) fixed term of three years but may be extended under certain circumstances.
