PhD Student in Medical Sciences – Health Economics (Mental Health)

The Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences is a department within the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University. The department currently has approximately 170 employees, and an additional 150 researchers are affiliated with the department. The activities consist of 11 research groups, and education is offered at all levels.

Uppsala Health Economics (UHE) is a specialised unit of health economists within the department. The group has extensive expertise in applying health economic methods to a range of health-related questions, including trial-based and model-based economic evaluations and analyses of register data to assess the health and economic impacts of healthcare interventions. The research covers areas such as mental health, child health, public health, precision medicine and innovation in healthcare. The group collaborates closely with clinicians, policymakers and international research partners and also undertakes commissioned work for healthcare providers, municipalities, regions and foundations.

We are now seeking a PhD student in health economics with a focus on mental health and preventive interventions in healthcare.

Duties

The PhD student will work within a research project aiming to analyse the economic burden of mental health conditions and the value of preventive interventions in Sweden.

The project includes several research activities, such as:

• estimating the societal economic burden of mental health conditions using population-based Swedish register data
• analysing the relationship between mental health and labour market outcomes
• conducting health economic evaluations and cost-effectiveness analyses of preventive interventions

The work will include analysis of register data, statistical analyses, economic modelling and synthesis of scientific literature. The project will be carried out in collaboration with researchers at Uppsala University and other national and international universities, as well as with clinicians, policymakers and other stakeholders.

The PhD student will also participate actively in the department's research environment and doctoral training activities, including courses and seminars.

Requirements

• hold a Master's (second-cycle) degree in health economics or public health, or
• have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master's level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

In addition, the following are required:

• documented experience in research or participation in research projects
• excellent oral and written communication skills in English

Additional qualifications

• experience working with Swedish individual level data or other quantitative data sources
• experience with health economic evaluations or decision-analytic modelling skills in
• statistical software such as STATA, R or similar
• experience conducting systematic literature reviews
• basic knowledge of Swedish
• a background in healthcare, medical sciences, pharmacy or other health-related disciplines

About the employment

The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7 Scope of employment 100 %. Starting date 1 April or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
