Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences
The Molecular Geriatrics research group at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences is located at the Rudbeck Laboratory. Our research focuses on the treatment and diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. The research is conducted in collaboration with university groups both in Sweden and internationally, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.
Duties Alzheimer's disease is currently the most common neurodegenerative disease, and the number of affected individuals is expected to increase as life expectancy rises. There is therefore a great need for both new therapies targeting the pathological changes that cause Alzheimer's disease and reliable, non-invasive methods to diagnose Alzheimer's disease, monitor disease progression in the brain, and measure the effects of drug treatment. The project focuses on developing antibody-based therapies and diagnostics for Alzheimer's disease through laboratory work in vitro, in cell models, and in vivo in disease models.
Requirements PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree, in pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmacokinetics, or a closely related field. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the deadline for applications. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.
Previous experience in independent research on drug distribution to the brain in both cell and animal models is required. Strong knowledge of blood-brain barrier biology and prior research on its role in drug transport to the brain are required. Experience with biochemical methods such as ELISA, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry for analyzing protein properties and protein levels in biological samples is required. Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English is required.
Additional qualifications Research experience in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease and neuroinflammation, is considered highly meritorious. Experience working with radioactivity is also considered an advantage.
