The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University is Sweden’s largest and most versatile department of its kind. The department have approximately 300 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural science and technology with social science. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; petrology, mineralogy and tectonics; paleobiology, and wind energy. By investigating the history of Earth, we understand how our planet has developed over time and how sustainable development benefits from this knowledge.

The announced position is in the research program Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL) which brings together research and education in hydrology, meteorology, environmental analysis and physical geography.

You will specifically be working in a group focusing on the dynamics, predictability and impacts of extreme climate events, coordinated by G. Messori. The research group works of multiple H2020/Horizon Europe and nationally-funded projects, and group members come from a broad range of backgrounds. The work related to this post-doctoral position is part of the DATE and PROMETHEUS projects, led by Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with Uppsala University, the University of Manchester, Human Technopole, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. You will work in close contact with international experts in population health, health data science, climate science, social science, and statistics.

You will also be part of the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes). Climes is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University and RISE. The Centre is at the core of a prolific interdisciplinary scientific community, and seeks to lead a lively series of meetings, international exchanges and training events.

Your main task is to conduct research within two projects focusing on the impacts of climate extremes and climatic factors on population health. Specifically, you will integrate and analyse large-scale climate and health datasets. You will identify and characterise extreme climate events using established metrics, and apply advanced statistical and data-driven models, such as distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs) and neural networks, to investigate temporal and non-linear associations with adverse health outcomes. The work will contribute to the development of spatially explicit health–climate risk maps. As part of your work, you will be expected to interact and collaborate closely with researchers from other institutions participating in the projects. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, and the standard mode of work will be in-person at the Department. National and international travel may be required. Teaching/supervising duties are possible on a voluntary basis up to 20%.

PhD degree in statistics, epidemiology, climate science, meteorology, data science or related disciplines or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We seek a proactive researcher, able to work both independently and as part of a multi-centre international project team, and with a strong drive to innovate and test new ideas. You should demonstrate a strong analytical mindset and the ability to handle complex, high-dimensional data. You should also have a demonstrated ability to communicate your research in a timely manner through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals, and have excellent spoken and written communication skills in English.

Previous experience with analysis of large climate and health data are a merit. We place particular weight on the quality of peer-reviewed publications and the ability to interact effectively in a multi- and interdisciplinary research environment.
