Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, South Parks Road, Oxford
We are seeking to appoint a talented and ambitious Postdoctoral Research Assistant interested in studying the molecular mechanisms of Salmonella pathogenesis, with a particular focus on the role of multidrug efflux pumps as virulence determinants. You will report to Dr Ilyas Alav, a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. As well as joining the dynamic research community at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, you will be part of a larger Salmonella and host-pathogen research group led by Prof. Teresa Thurston.
The post-holder should be able to work independently and manage their own academic research programme in efflux pump biology and bacterial pathogenesis. You will use your initiative to drive the research forward in a rigorous, efficient and timely manner while exploring multifaceted efflux pump functions in bacterial virulence. The post-holder will have a high degree of autonomy in developing methodology and experimental approaches, alongside the opportunity to build on existing expertise in bacteriology, cell biology, and biochemistry within the group.
The post-holder should hold, or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in biological sciences, (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, or a related discipline). You will have prior experience in microbiology ideally with a focus on bacteriology, and possess strong expertise in general molecular approaches and cell culture. Experience in microbiology and host-pathogen interactions is essential.
Informal inquiries can be sent to Dr Ilyas Alav via email ilyas.alav@path.ox.ac.uk.
This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 2 years in the first instance. If you are interested in this role, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your application.
The closing date for applications is midday on 29 May 2026. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
