Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Magee lab studies the mechanisms that regulate childhood blood development and genetic changes that cause leukemia in children. We have several projects related to these general topics. Each focuses on gene regulation – and changes that occur in gene regulation – during stem cell development and differentiation. We use mice to model pediatric malignancies. The overall goal of our work is to develop new treatments for children with leukemia and other blood disorders.

An ideal candidate for this position will have a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in biological sciences or related fields and be seeking their first postdoc. Experience in molecular biology and genomics is preferred. Programming skills are desired but not required. Applicants must have good spoken and written communication skills. Trainees will gain experience in mouse models of human malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell biology, genomics and translational research.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

1. Managing their own project, which should lead to a first author publication.
2. Developing proficiency in hematopoietic stem cell and leukemia biology.
3. Developing proficiency with mouse genetic models, stem cell transplantation, and hematopoietic stem cell analyses.
4. Developing proficiency in their ancillary skills, e.g., writing, public speaking, networking, critical evaluation of scientific documents, etc.
5. Presenting scientific work both inside and outside the University.
6. Assisting with grant preparation and reporting.
7. Preparing and submitting papers on research.
8. Assisting in the design of research experiments.
9. Evaluating research findings and assisting in the reporting of the results.
10. Conscientious discharge of their research responsibilities.
11. Maintaining conformity with ethical standards in research.
12. Maintaining compliance with good laboratory practice including the maintenance of adequate research records.
13. Engaging in open and timely discussion with their mentor regarding possession or distribution of material, reagents, or records belonging to their laboratory and any proposed disclosure of findings or techniques privately or in publications.
14. Collegial conduct towards co-trainees, staff members and members of the research group.
15. Adherence to all applicable University policies, procedures and regulations. All data, research records and materials and other intellectual property generated in University laboratories remain the property of the University.

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Base pay is commensurate with experience.
