Join a high-impact, collaborative research program at UQ as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working at the intersection of visualisation, visual analytics, human-centred computing, and spatial environmental analytics. In this role, you will design next-generation interactive tools that help researchers and decision-makers explore complex trade-offs across biodiversity, renewable energy, and agricultural productivity using cutting-edge land-use models (LUTO2).
You'll be part of a supportive, multidisciplinary environment spanning UQ's School of the Environment and Human-Centred Computing, with strong national collaboration. This is a unique opportunity to build your research independence, grow your expertise in computational visualisation and decision support, and contribute to innovative solutions that shape sustainable land-use futures.
Key responsibilities will include:
Research: Develop and deliver a research program in computational visualisation and visual analytics, including designing interactive tools, applying human-centred methods, publishing outputs, and contributing to funding applications and collaborative projects.
Supervision and Researcher Development: Support and mentor Honours and HDR students, providing guidance in visual analytics and research practices while contributing to effective coordination of research activities.
Citizenship and Service: Contribute to a collaborative research culture through active participation in service roles, cross-disciplinary engagement, and building relationships with academic, industry, and government partners.
This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ's Criteria for Academic Performance.
Completion or near completion of a PhD in computer science, information visualisation, visual analytics, human-centred computing (HCI), spatial data science, or a closely related discipline (e.g. applied mathematics, environmental informatics).
An emerging research profile aligned to areas such as interactive visualisation, visual analytics, human-centred computing, spatial/temporal visualisation, geo-visual analytics, or decision-support interfaces.
Demonstrated research capability through publications in high-quality journals and presentations at recognised conferences.
Proven ability, or strong interest, in working with large, high-dimensional datasets and translating complex modelling outputs into intuitive visual tools.
Proficiency in relevant programming languages or tools (e.g. R, Python, JavaScript, Ruby) for developing interactive, data-driven visualisations.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences in interdisciplinary environments.
Evidence of contribution to service and a commitment to fostering an inclusive, collegial research culture.
Desirable:
Experience with land-use or environmental datasets, multi-objective modelling (e.g. Pareto frontiers), usability testing with domain experts, or cross-institutional collaboration.
Appointment to this role is subject to the successful completion of relevant pre-employment checks, which may include verification of the right to work in Australia and qualifications check. This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.
You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Employer sponsored work rights are not available for this appointment.
