We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a new partnership between the University of Oxford and GSK focused on biostatistics and artificial intelligence (AI) for application in medicine, with a primary focus on optimising clinical trial design. You will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers contributing to ambitious, cross-disciplinary research spanning operations research, statistics, machine learning, management science, and clinical applications. The role is based in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the Big Data Institute, with strong links to departments across the University including Engineering Science, Computer Science, Statistics and Saïd Business School.
You will be responsible for managing your own academic research and administrative activities, including planning, coordinating activities, and maintaining accurate records of work. You will contribute to the development of novel research methodologies and 'pathfinder' projects, helping shape the direction of research themes related to clinical trial design, drug discovery and operational efficiency. You will develop and apply quantitative methods, analyse complex datasets, and refine theoretical approaches.
It is essential that you hold, or are close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant quantitative discipline such as operations research, statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering or a related field. You will have a strong track record of research in areas such as machine learning, optimisation, sequential decision-making or biostatistics, evidenced by publications or equivalent outputs. You will have experience in developing and applying quantitative or computational methods to complex problems, and the ability to analyse and interpret data from a range of sources. You will demonstrate the ability to manage your own research, work collaboratively across disciplines, and communicate effectively with both academic and non-academic stakeholders. A willingness to work across thematic areas and contribute to an interdisciplinary research environment is essential.
Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract until 30 September 2028 and is funded by GSK. Only applications received before 12 midday on Wednesday 20 May 2026 will be considered. Please quote 186358 on all correspondence.
