You are welcome to join a successful translational research group at KI. In a well-established network of cardiovascular research, our group is focused on identification of molecular signaling in cardiovascular regulation, disease mechanisms of coronary artery disease and ischemic heart disease as well as development of novel cardioprotective strategies in acute myocardial infarction. The clinical importance of these mechanisms is subsequently investigated in well-defined patient cohorts with risk factors for and developed coronary artery disease.

Your Mission

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology on collaboration with the Cardiology Unit at Department of Medicine, Solna, has a postdoc position in cardiovascular research open for a highly motivated scientist. The project is focused on problems related to fundamental aspects of signaling involving nitric oxide in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. A particular focus is to continue our successful project exploring the role of red blood cells and their interaction with the heart and vasculature during situations of hypoxia and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. By using red blood cells collected from patient cohorts and gene targeted mouse models, molecular signaling and novel treatment strategies in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury are investigated. The studies are mainly performed in models of isolated Langendorff-perfused whole hearts.

Your Profile

Requirements:

• Strong research background in experimental and/or translational cardiovascular research, documented through publications related to cardiovascular disease
• Documented experience with isolated perfused whole heart models
• Ability to contribute to experimental design, execution of experiments, presentation of results, and preparation of manuscripts
• High level of personal suitability, including creativity, strong work ethic, and ability to work collaboratively
• Proficiency in spoken and written English

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with isolated mouse hearts
• Experience with laboratory methods such as:
• Isolated vessel studies in myographs
• Western blotting
• Immunohistochemistry
• Cell culture techniques

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

The position is a two-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of extension.

The position is located within the research group of professor Jon Lundberg/John Pernow at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at KI and in collaboration with the Cardiology unit at BioClinicum at Karolinska University Hospital, Solna.
