Postdoctoral Researcher in Human-Computer Interaction for Clinical AI in Intensive Care

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the aICU programme at Karolinska Institutet, Södersjukhuset, a clinically embedded research initiative focused on the safe translation of AI-based decision support in intensive care. The project combines a large-scale ICU research platform for retrospective studies with the development of methods and systems for real-time evaluation in clinical settings. You will contribute to human-computer interaction (HCI) research that prepares AI systems for safe prospective testing in routine ICU care.

The position as a postdoctoral researcher is a fixed-term employment for 2 years.

Your Mission

The focus of this role is HCI research in critical care, at the intersection of AI, clinical decision-making, and real-world healthcare practice. You will design and lead studies on how AI systems are understood, trusted, and integrated into ICU workflows. The work combines qualitative and mixed-methods research that directly informs model development, enabling the design of more clinically grounded and relevant AI systems. This is complemented by simulation-based evaluations and studies in real clinical settings. The overall aim is to generate robust evidence on usability, safety, interpretability, and workflow integration, and to actively shape the development of safe and clinically relevant AI systems before prospective testing in routine care.

You will work closely with clinicians and researchers at Karolinska Institutet and Södersjukhuset, in direct proximity to the ICU environment. The role involves collaboration within a local interdisciplinary team as well as with leading national and international research groups in AI and related fields.

Your Profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD in human-computer interaction or equivalent is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. In addition, you are required to have the following in order to be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher:

Requirements

• Documented research experience in HCI in healthcare or clinical environments
• Competence in qualitative or mixed-methods research
• Experience studying digital systems, clinical decision support, or AI-enabled tools in healthcare practice
• Demonstrated ability to independently design and lead qualitative or mixed-methods studies
• Excellent written and spoken English

Meritorious qualifications

• Peer-reviewed publications in HCI and healthcare
• Experience of usability evaluation, workflow analysis, and interface evaluation in safety-critical environments
• Experience eliciting and structuring clinical knowledge for integration with computational or machine learning models
• Experience of co-design or user-centred design with healthcare professionals
• Experience of research informing the design, implementation, or evaluation of digital systems prior to clinical deployment
• Experience of prototyping or developing interfaces (e.g. using programming or design tools) for research or evaluation purposes
• Documented experience of collaboration across institutions, including national and international research collaborations
• Experience working in interdisciplinary teams involving clinicians and technical researchers
