The Division of Molecular Metabolism at Karolinska Institutet is located in the newly built Biomedicum at the Solna campus. The division offers a highly collaborative research environment that integrates basic molecular research with clinical science, including close interaction with the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital. Researchers have access to advanced molecular and cell biology infrastructure, complemented by national core facilities at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab).

We are currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the research group of Professor Anna Wredenberg. Our research focuses on understanding the regulation of mitochondrial function and how mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to human disease and aging. By combining genetic, biochemical, structural, and systems-level approaches with animal models and patient-derived material, we aim to uncover disease mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic strategies.

The Wredenberg group conducts research at the interface of basic and translational mitochondrial biology, with a particular focus on mitochondrial gene expression and the molecular consequences of metabolic dysfunction in patients with inherited metabolic and mitochondrial diseases. A current major research direction is understanding how mitochondria integrate into cellular and organismal metabolism, including the role of mitochondrial S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) in diverse mitochondrial processes.

We employ a broad range of genetic, biochemical, and omics-based approaches, working with genetically modified Drosophila melanogaster and mouse models, as well as patient-derived samples from individuals with inborn errors of metabolism.

Your mission

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead and contribute to projects aimed at:

• Investigating molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial gene expression, and/or
• Dissecting the interplay between mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism in health, disease, and aging.

You will work within a small, interactive team using biochemistry, molecular biology, modern omics approaches, and structural methods. The projects involve in vivo models, including genetically engineered and conditional knockout mouse or fly strains, and may include patient-derived material. You are expected to take an active role in experimental design, data analysis, and dissemination of results.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated candidates who have:

• A PhD in molecular biology, genetics, or a related field
• Documented experience working with mouse models
• Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English

Meriting

• A collaborative mindset and strong documentation skills

Personal suitability and the ability to work well within a team will be given significant weight in the evaluation.

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. A foreign researcher is a person living in another country who comes to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent. To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post-doctoral education.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
