Research Assistant

The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at NTU is a diverse school focusing on the connections between geosciences, ecology, society and Earth systems. Our approach integrates these disciplines to examine big environmental challenges both in Southeast Asia and globally. We conduct cutting-edge research on topics that include ecology, geohazards, climate change, sea-level rise, environmental sustainability, conservation of environment and biodiversity, and interactions between environment and society. We are inviting applications for a Research Assistant (6-8 months) to help with fieldwork, labwork and administrative tasks within the Tropical Ecology & Entomology group at ASE. The successful candidate will join the Forest Ecology group at ASE working under Assoc Prof. Eleanor Slade, joining a vibrant, international scientific department. Candidates with prior experience in entomology with field and lab work experience are preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

The main tasks that the Research Assistant will lead are:

• Curating the samples and specimens held in the lab
• Using the digital auto-montage to photograph specimens
• Mentoring undergraduate students
• Helping with DNA extraction of samples
• Helping with fieldwork
• Assisting with day-to-day running of the Lab e.g. ordering equipment, assisting with invoicing, managing the lab website and Dropbox, writing SOPs
• Helping with outreach activities e.g. website, blogs, video diaries, Flickr
• Helping to analyze data and write scientific papers.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor degree in Biological Science or any related field
• Knowledge of museum curation techniques and relevant experience of specimen curation
• Experience in databasing biological specimens
• Experience working with insect collections and knowledge of entomology
• Knowledge of and interest in working with invertebrates
• Experience with auto-montage techniques would be an advantage
• Willingness to learn and adopt new techniques and methodologies
• Good team work and collaboration skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently with good attention to detail
