Research Coordinator

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine is Canada's only free-standing faculty dedicated to rehabilitation. It offers accredited professional programs in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a substantial research and continuing education portfolio. This position has a term length of 1 year plus 1 day, with the possibility of extension. Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

The Research Coordinator will work with Dr. Victor Ezeugwu at the Human Movement Lab (Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta) and will support the successful execution of the Behavioural Intervention and Guided Stepping Training Early Post-Stroke (BIG STEPS) trial and related research activities. This position will coordinate day-to-day research operations, including ethics submissions, trial registration, participant recruitment, data collection, and project management. The Research Coordinator will lead the management, cleaning, and analysis of large datasets derived from human movement measurement technologies, including wearable sensors and motion capture systems. The role requires strong analytical skills and experience working with complex longitudinal and behavioural datasets. Proficiency in statistical software such as Stata and R is considered a strong asset. This position will also support knowledge translation activities, manuscript preparation, grant reporting, and collaboration with multisite and multidisciplinary research teams.

Responsibilities

Research Coordination/Project Management (60%)

• Coordinate day-to-day operations of the BIG STEPS trial and related research projects using project management tools such as MS project.
• Coordinates ethics applications, amendments/renewals, and site operational approvals through Health Research Ethics Board and NACTRC; ensure all activities comply with TCPS 2 (Tri-Council Policy Statement) and ICH-GCP guidelines.
• Support trial registration (eg., ClinicalTrials.gov) and maintain current information on the site.
• Oversee participant recruitment. Develop recruitment tracking systems to monitor enrollment rates across sites. Maintain participant master list(s) (consented/declined).
• Liaise with clinical sites, collaborators, and research staff.
• Answer questions related to study procedures and data collection protocols.
• Monitor data quality, protocol compliance, and intervention fidelity.
• Build and maintain study databases, tracking logs, and documentation systems.
• Provide weekly progress updates to the study PI.

Research Activities, Data Management, and Knowledge Translation (40%)

• Screening, recruitment, and enrolment of potential study participants, including obtaining informed consent.
• Addresses participant concerns and troubleshoots virtually and/or in-person.
• Responsible for room and procedure bookings for participant visits and meetings.
• Organize and ensure that data collection tools are available and ready for participant visits.
• Travel between research and clinical sites in Edmonton and Calgary, as needed.
• Conduct statistical analyses using Stata and/or R to support study objectives.
• Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), data dictionaries, and reproducible workflows.
• Support manuscript preparation, conference abstracts, and presentations.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Master's or Ph.D. level degree in an associated field, including but not limited to rehabilitation medicine, kinesiology, nursing, public health, community health, and clinical epidemiology.
• Experience managing research projects or components of projects (e.g., tracking timelines, coordinating tasks, monitoring progress against established milestones) is preferred.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, as evidenced by scientific writing (thesis, reports, or publications) and presentations to academic or professional audiences.
• Experience working collaboratively within interdisciplinary research teams (e.g., clinicians, trainees, research assistants).
• Experience preparing or supporting competitive research grant applications (e.g., drafting methods sections, budgets, or work plans).
• Knowledge of Albert's health system and previous experience with ConnectCare is an asset.

Preferred qualifications:

• Graduate level training (e.g., coursework) in statistics, biostatistics or quantitative analysis and ability to use STATA or R.
• Computer proficiency in Windows using MS office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
• Familiarity with University of Alberta policies and procedures.
